Tieg Murray is a new member of the Editorial Advisory Board

91ԭƬÌý(SCN)Ìýwas excited to welcomeÌýTieg MurrayÌýtoÌýtheÌý2026ÌýEditorial Advisory Board.ÌýAsÌýVice President of Market Strategy and Creative Services for Skanska USA Building,ÌýMurrayÌýleads strategic planning to strengthen market differentiation across core sectors, including education. Over the last 19 years at Skanska, Murray has advanced from Marketing Coordinator to senior leadership roles, driving growth strategies for higher education, K-12,ÌýscienceÌýand technology.ÌýÌý

In her time at Skanska,ÌýMurray has seen a lot of evolution across theÌýeducation and research worldÌý— andÌýbelieves that higherÌýeducationÌýisÌýin a moment of real transformation.Ìý

“Students’ needs are shifting,Ìýand breakthroughs in science, medicine and technology are happening faster than ever,â€ Murray said.Ìý“Being part of a team that helps campuses adapt to those changes has made the work deeply meaningful for me.ÌýWe’reÌýnot just constructing buildings.ÌýWe’reÌýshaping environments that will support the next generation of students,ÌýresearchersÌýand innovators.â€Ìý

SCN spoke with Murry about the evolution of science and research facilities, futureÌýtrendsÌýand big projects on the horizon.Ìý

SCN:ÌýWhat first drew you to the educationÌýsector, andÌýwhat’sÌýkept youÌýinvestedÌýover time?ÌýÌý

Murray:ÌýI’mÌýdrawn to university projects and their ability to shapeÌýtheÌýstudentÌýexperience and influence the future.ÌýThat interest has grown into a real passion for university science facilitiesÌý—Ìýtheir complexity, precisionÌýand the incredible innovation thatÌýhappens within those spacesÌý—Ìýmake them my favorite projectÌýtype thatÌýSkanskaÌýdelivers.ÌýHigherÌýed campuses haveÌýaÌýuniqueÌýenergy.ÌýThey’reÌýplaces where ideas takeÌýshapeÌýand communities thrive. Knowing Skanska is trusted to build spaces that will directly support the next generation of researchers, educators and students is what keeps me invested and inspired in the work every day.Ìý

SCN:ÌýScience and research environments have evolved rapidly in recent years.ÌýWhat’sÌýbeen the most significant shift since you began working in this space?ÌýÌý

One of the biggest shiftsÌýisÌýthe evolution ofÌýscience and research environments.ÌýLabs wereÌýtraditionally built around a singleÌýdisciplineÌýwith very defined boundaries. TodayÌý… science buildings are intentionally interdisciplinary, more technologically driven and built with flexibility at their core.ÌýThey’reÌýdesigned to support rapid change, encourageÌýcollaborationÌýand adapt to research needs weÌýcan’tÌýeven predict.ÌýWatchingÌýthisÌýevolutionÌýmakesÌýthe work more excitingÌýand more challenging.ÌýIt’sÌýreinforced just how critical thoughtful planning and true industryÌýexpertiseÌýhave become.Ìý

SCN:ÌýLooking ahead, how do you see education environmentsÌý—Ìýparticularly science and STEM spacesÌý—Ìýneeding to adapt?ÌýÌý

Over the next five toÌý10Ìýyears, science and STEM environments will need to become even more flexible andÌýforward-looking. Research is evolving too quickly for buildings to be tied to a single purpose, which makes adaptability essential.ÌýWe’reÌýseeing a strong shift toward spaces that can be reconfigured with ease, support emergingÌýtechnologiesÌýand encourage collaboration across disciplines. Open labs, sharedÌýequipmentÌýandÌýpurpose-builtÌýcollaboration areas are no longerÌý“nice to haveâ€Ìýfeatures.ÌýThey’reÌýbecoming fundamental to how innovation and learning take place on campuses.Ìý

At the same time, institutions are facing increasing pressure toÌýoperateÌýmore efficiently and more responsibly. Sustainability,Ìýresilience,Ìýand performance are now central considerations in planning and delivering new facilities. Universities are working hard to reduce energy use and manageÌýlong-termÌýoperating costs, allÌýwhile supportingÌýhighly complexÌýresearch programs.ÌýSkanska is helping campuses meet these demands by delivering high-performing, resilient facilitiesÌýthat supportÌýcutting-edgeÌýresearchÌýwhile lowering energy consumption and lifecycleÌýcosts.Ìý

SCN:ÌýWhat projects are youÌýexcited to see come to fruition?ÌýÌý

On the East Coast,ÌýI’mÌýproud ofÌýwhat’sÌýaheadÌýforÌýSimmons University with the new Living Learning CenterÌýin BostonÌýand at the University of Virginia with the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of BiotechnologyÌýinÌýCharlottesville. These are the kinds of facilities that will open doors for studentsÌýand createÌýricher learning experiences,ÌýwhileÌýgiving researchers the spaces they need to push discovery forward.ÌýÌý

On the West Coast,Ìýin Seattle,Ìýthe University of Washington’s Magnuson Health Sciences T-Wing Renovation isÌýa great exampleÌýofÌýhowÌýwe’reÌýhelping institutions breathe new life into older facilities so they can keep pace with rapidly evolving scientific needs. Seeing an aging building transformed into a place that supports modern research isÌýexciting andÌýrewarding.Ìý

In theÌýK-12 world, projects like the Beaverton High School ModernizationÌýin Oregon, Rye Ranch ElementaryÌýin Florida,Ìýand the new Arlington High SchoolÌýinÌýMassachusetts,Ìýremind me why this work matters so much. These schools will shape the daily experience of younger students,Ìýgiving them safe, inspiring,ÌýfutureÌýready spaces where they can learn and grow.Ìý

Ultimately, acrossÌýall these regions and project types, what excites me most is how each facility will directly support student success, research advancement, and community impact, and how Skanska continues to be a trusted partner in shaping the future of education.ÌýÌý

Watch for more insights from Murray and other Editorial Advisory Board membersÌýthroughout the year.Ìý
